Name Origin: Miragaia stands for "Beautiful Earth Goddess”. We discovered this classic Portuguese grape-tending beauty in the town of Miragaia, Portugal on one of our many winemaker trips! Because we’re a woman-owned winery – we present one more female-focused wine label to celebrate the history of women in winemaking.
The grape Carménère originated in Bordeaux, France and historically produced deep red wines in European soils. Many years after the European phylloxera plague of 1867 wiped the grape out, Carménère was rediscovered in Chile and eventually made its way to the US in small quantities – specifically to far Eastern Washington (where we sourced these grapes). Carménère is a member of the Cabernet family of grapes – so the first thing wine lovers look for in this grape is the green bell pepper “Pyrazine” chemical compound that Cabernet grapes offer. Honestly, green bell pepper can be a turn off for many – but with winemaker Pam’s stellar winemaking skills – she’s now produced her first Carménère allowing the bell pepper flavors to add layers of complexity, surprise, and a light pepper “zing” to this wine.
This crimson-colored, medium intensity wine displays aromas of ripe red to black fruits of raspberry to black plum. That ripe fruit theme continues on the palate with pomegranate, raspberry, black fruits, some green herbs, and mild green pepper on the mid-palate. Lite body – easy drinking – truly a delightful surprise for those who love Carménère.
This wine pairs beautifully with foods that are often difficult to match with wine. First, look for foods that contain peppers. Because of the flavors of green bell pepper and herbs, Carménère pairs well with tomato salsas, chimichurri, and many vegetable-based dishes. Carménère is also the best wine pairing with most Mexican food and many traditional Greek dishes. Carménère has a good tannic structure which will make a great match with grilled meats as well.
